Helping Children Move Beyond Access to Meaningful Inclusion
For many children with feeding differences and paediatric feeding disorders, having food available is not the same as being able to participate in eating. While traditional support often focuses on food provision, true inclusion requires a broader understanding of feeding development, learning, and participation. The Foundation for Feeding, Education & Development (F.E.D Foundation) is committed to bridging that gap.
Inspired by the principles of the Eating as Learning (EaL) Framework, we recognise that eating is a developmental skill that children learn over time, just like walking, communicating, and social interaction. Every child deserves the opportunity not only to receive food, but to develop the confidence, skills, and support needed to engage with food in ways that are meaningful to them.
What Is Food Participation?
Food participation goes beyond nutrition and calorie intake. It means enabling children and young people to:
- Join family mealtimes with confidence
- Participate in school food activities and celebrations
- Explore foods without pressure or fear
- Develop feeding skills at their own pace
- Experience social connection through shared eating opportunities
- Have their individual needs, preferences, and sensory experiences respected
Food participation recognises that successful feeding is not about compliance. It is about creating opportunities for learning, engagement, autonomy, and belonging.
Why Participation Matters
When feeding challenges are viewed only through a medical or nutritional lens, children can miss out on important developmental and social experiences. Feeding difficulties can affect:
- Education and school attendance
- Social inclusion and friendships
- Family wellbeing and mealtime relationships
- Emotional health and self-confidence
- Long-term relationships with food
By focusing on participation, we help children build positive experiences around food while supporting families, educators, and professionals to create environments where children can thrive.
Our Approach
At the F.E.D Foundation, we champion a developmental, child-centred, and neuro-affirming approach to feeding.
We believe:
Feeding Is a Learning Journey
Every child develops feeding skills differently. Progress should be measured through growth, engagement, curiosity, and participation rather than unrealistic expectations or one-size-fits-all outcomes.
Safety Comes First
Children learn best when they feel physically and emotionally safe. Predictable environments, trusted relationships, and respect for individual experiences create the foundation for successful feeding development.
Families Are Essential Partners
Parents and caregivers play a central role in supporting feeding development. Empowering families with knowledge, practical strategies, and compassionate support creates lasting change.
Inclusion Is Non-Negotiable
Every child should be able to participate in food-related experiences in ways that respect their strengths, differences, and personal journey. Food participation is a matter of equity, not privilege.
Creating a Future Where Every Child Can Participate
Moving from food provision to food participation requires collaboration across health, education, community services, and families. Together, we can create systems that recognise feeding development as a vital part of a child’s growth, wellbeing, learning, and inclusion.
The F.E.D Foundation exists to ensure that children are not defined by what they can or cannot eat, but are supported to participate, belong, and flourish in every environment where food plays a role.
Because access to food is important. Participation in life is transformational.
